Privacy and your data
Your books belong to you, so FreedomBooks keeps them with you.
Your books stay on your computer
- All of your books are kept in one file on your own computer.
- That file is encrypted (using SQLCipher).
- FreedomBooks works offline. You don't need an internet connection to do your bookkeeping.
- There is no cloud account to create and no FreedomBooks server holding your books.
- Because it is one file, you can keep a copy somewhere safe, just like any other important file.
When something connects to the internet
Only the optional plugins connect to outside services, and only after you turn them on:
- Bank feeds talk to SimpleFIN using your SimpleFIN account.
- Invoice email sends through your Gmail, Microsoft 365 or SMTP mail account.
- Receipt reading sends the receipt to ChatGPT using your own ChatGPT account. What comes back is a draft that you check before saving.
Each of those services has its own privacy terms, which apply when you use it.
Open source
FreedomBooks is open source, so anyone will be able to read the code and check how it handles your data. The source code will be published on GitHub.
